Are you ready to start BJJ?
Then you’ve come to the right place. Our instructors have taught the basics of BJJ to hundreds of beginners.
Here are the three most important tips for beginners:
TIP 1: STAY CALM
This is crucial. Many people go into fight-or-flight mode when they start sparring. The big secret is to stay calm. Why? It allows you to focus on the techniques you’ve learned, conserves your energy, and makes it harder for your opponent to move you. Think about it: who is easier to lift? Someone who tenses up or someone who lies completely relaxed on the ground?
TIP 2: TAKE NOTES
Everyone learns in different ways, but what works well for many of our members is taking notes immediately after class. This way, you can easily review what you’ve learned. Go through the techniques in your mind once again. Research shows that visualizing techniques is almost as effective as physically practicing them.
TIP 3: CONSISTENCY IS KEY
We understand that BJJ is a lot of fun. However, don’t go from zero training sessions to ten per week all at once. Your body will struggle to keep up, and there’s a high chance you’ll need a week to recover afterwards. Aim for training 2 to 3 times per week initially, and gradually increase from there.
